About Exponents

An exponent indicates how many times a number (the base) is multiplied by itself.

Example: 23 = 2 × 2 × 2 = 8

Special Cases

  • Any number to the power of 0 equals 1 (x0 = 1)
  • Any number to the power of 1 equals itself (x1 = x)
  • Negative exponents create fractions (x-n = 1/xn)
  • Fractional exponents are roots (x1/2 = √x)
